Summary:
  • Yang is born and her birth mother leaves her with her father, Taiyang, for reasons unknown and has not been seen since.

  • Sometime in the two years following, Yang's father falls in love with Summer Rose who raises Yang as her own daughter and eventually gives birth to Ruby Rose.

  • When Yang is a little older and Ruby still a toddler, Summer Rose leaves on a mission and does not return (it is strongly implied that she died). Ruby is devastated and Yang's father falls into a depression. It is assumed Yang had to take over at least some of Ruby's care, acting as both a sister and a surrogate mom at a very young age.

  • Yang discovers the truth about her parentage and becomes obsessed with discovering the identity of her birth mother and the reasons behind her leaving. Unable to get answers, when she finally finds a potential clue, she follows it to an abandoned dwelling in the woods, bringing along her baby sister in a wagon. Instead of her mother, she finds a pack of monsters that immediately lunge for the attack. Luckily, she and Ruby are saved by their Uncle Qrow. Yang continues to search for her mother in the years following but without her previous fervor.

  • Yang attends Signal Academy to begin combat training in order to become a Huntress, or monster fighter. There, in addition to honing her battle skills, she designs and crafts her signature weapon of dual-ranged shot-gauntlets, Ember Celica. At some point, she also gets a really cool motorcycle (Bumblebee).

  • At the age of 17, Yang is accepted into Beacon Academy, a prestigious 4-year school for future Huntsmen and Huntresses. Separate of this, while continuing her on-going search for her birth mother, she enters a nightclub on the shady side of town, roughly interrogates the owner for information on her mother, and then proceeds to beat down him and his henchmen when they retaliate.

  • Yang learns that her little sister Ruby, after skillfully foiling a robbery, is being moved ahead two years to join her at Beacon Academy. There they meet several other future huntsmen and huntresses, among which are corporate heiress Weiss Schnee, reserved bookworm Blake Belladonna, and the tall, blonde, and scraggly Jaune Arc.

  • Yang goes through Initiation in which she is paired with the partner she will have for the duration of her stay in Beacon. That partner is Blake Belladonna. The two re-join with Ruby and her new partner Weiss and together successfully take down a giant raven-like monster as the newly formed, titular team RWBY.

  • Following the revelation that her partner, Blake, is a faunus, a group of animal humanoids frequently discriminated against, and was also a former member of a large faunus-exclusive terrorist organization, Yang helped her friends search for her missing partner in an effort to reunite the team and eventually, after an altercation with the terrorist group she used to belong to, Blake re-joined them.

  • In the semester afterwards, Team RWBY decides to further investigate the terrorist organization and find out what they're up to. Realizing she'd seen the organization's supposed ringleader in the dance club she blew up at the start of the year, Yang returns to the club and again interrogates the owner for information but without much success.

  • Her teammates' investigations prove more fruitful, although that fruit comes in the shape of a fight with the terrorist group's ringleader in a giant mech suit. Yang aids in the defeat of the robot, handily dealing the final blow, but the villain escapes with the help of a mysterious henchman before she can apprehend him.

  • Following a new lead, Team RWBY tails a professional Huntsmen to an abandoned city, Mountain Glenn, in the hopes of finally putting a stop to the terrorist organization's activities. They discover the organization is literally working underground and board the train the terrorists plan to use to crash through their home city's fortifications and lure a hoard of monsters inside.

  • The team splits up in order to have the best chance at stopping the train. Inside one of the cars, Yang encounters the same mysterious henchman that got away from her after the robot fight. She engages her in battle, but is badly defeated and knocked unconscious. Before a fatal blow can be dealt however, Yang is saved by an unknown masked woman who fends away her attacker but leaves before Yang fully comes to.

  • Yang re-joins her team but they are unable to stop the train from breaking into town and loosing a bunch of monsters onto the unsuspecting citizens inside. Team RWBY quickly rallies however and, with the aid of other teams and professors from Beacon Academy, successfully destroy all the monsters, save the city, and also finally succeed in capturing the terrorist organization's leader. Or did they?

  • Yang Xiao Long, much as her name and her character theme imply, is a force to be reckoned with. She can be warm and gentle like the glow of a hearth, bright and cheering like sunshine, and yet dangerously aggressive and destructive in a fight like a wildfire. Vivacious and fun-loving, Yang practically exudes confidence, both in herself and in the people she cares about, frequently offering words of reassurance or optimism. She is fearless in the face of conflict, often smiling or outright grinning at her opponent or opponents, as she has no problems taking on more than one at a time. Never one to pass up a good thrill, she seems to almost revel in the unexpected. In fact, the potential for adventure and seeing new places was key in her choice to become a Huntress, the prospect of helping people initially somewhat secondary.

Yang has exceptional self-esteem and an incredibly positive body image, almost verging on vanity. She is fully aware of how her looks might make others initially perceive her and she is happy to play up the part of the witless blonde in order to appear like a non-threat and gain an advantage over potential opponents as she did in her introductory trailer. She has no qualms with flirting, regardless of whether she is actually interested in the receiving party or not such as when she persuades Junior Xiong, owner of the dance club she infiltrates twice, to "kiss and make up" with her right before she sends him flying into a wine rack, or when she is ogling the attractive guys across the room from her on her first night at Beacon.

She is incredibly dedicated to her younger sister, Ruby, encouraging and comforting her as well as aiding and backing her up when needed, particularly in social situations which Yang navigates with ease. She was genuinely excited at the prospect of her sister joining her at Beacon, almost more so than Ruby herself was. On the other hand, she's not afraid to let her sister fly on her own, sometimes with a good-natured shove out of the proverbial nest, so that Ruby can learn and grow as a person and Yang holds no jealousy towards her sister's accomplishments, even when she's made leader of their team over her following their Initiation, simply endlessly proud of her.

In keeping with her generally cheerful nature, Yang has a quirky sense of humor, often playfully teasing her sister or making light sarcastic remarks about her teammates. She's not above making snarky comments about other people, even about her professors, and will banter with her opponents during a fight she knows she has the upper-hand in. Taking inspiration from her voice actress, Yang can be prone to making puns although she tends to find them a lot funnier than her friends do. She seems to happily go along with most things if she doesn't outright instigate them, whether it's a simple card game with her teammates or a large-scale food fight against friends.

Beneath her sunny, "party-girl" disposition though lies a compassionate and almost motherly figure. This can best be seen in her interactions with Ruby, balancing the parts of a supportive sister and a pseudo-parent. This extends to her teammates too however, as Yang made a point of taking her partner Blake aside in the episode "Burning the Candle", sitting her down and talking to her when the girl was losing sleep and not eating due to stress from their investigations. During this talk, Yang shared that she too had struggled with an obsession over a quest for information when, as a child, she and Ruby lost their mom, only for Yang to realize that that woman wasn't her birth mother. Her biological mother had left her with her father after she was born and had not been seen since. She and Ruby were actually half-sisters and Ruby's mom apparently raised them as if they were both her own daughters as Yang seemed to have nothing but fond memories of her. Regardless, this truth about her parentage, likely coupled with grief at losing the mother who raised her, drove Yang to obsessively search out any information she could about her birth mother. This quest culminated on a day where, after finally finding a possible solid lead about her mother, Yang traveled out into the woods without telling anyone, taking her baby sister with her. However instead of discovering anything about her birth mother, the two were nearly attacked and killed by monsters, only saved by the timely intervention of their Uncle Qrow. Following that, while Yang continues to search for information about her mother as a teenager, she refuses to let her desire for answers control her the way it previously had, essentially acknowledging how actions like that can affect those around her as well as rob one of a chance to enjoy other things in life. This story also helped to further demonstrate that Yang can be incredibly worldly and wise despite her youth and her general demeanor.

Yang does have a temper however, and she can become frustrated by things getting too far out of hand like they did during her Initiation to Beacon where one crazy thing happened immediately after another until she finally shouted at everyone to chill. Damaging her hair, even just one strand, will send her flying into a literal red-eyed rage of fury and fists. Especially fists. While her tantrums tend to fizzle out quickly, with Yang often immediately going back to her usual cheery if sarcastic self, they can still be unsettling. Yang can also be a bit of a sore loser and gets irritable sometimes when things don't go her way as seen in her dissatisfaction and grumpiness after her lead at the dance club turned out to be a bust. She doesn't like when somebody makes her look bad, especially in a fight, and she can hold a grudge against those who have. This trait nearly proved deadly for her when she engaged in a fight with the mysterious Neopolitan, a girl who had helped one of the main antagonists of the series escape from Yang following a fight with Team RWBY. Yang later encountered the girl again on the train the villains were using to lure a hoard of monsters into the city and chose to fight the henchman alone, confident she could beat her and make her pay for the "insult" she suffered earlier. However, Yang was engaging an opponent whom she knew almost nothing about and was unable to land any direct hits on the girl before she was soundly beaten and knocked unconscious. She would have been killed if not for the interference of an unknown woman wearing a mask, who left before Yang fully came to and she may or may not even have informed her teammates of this defeat and subsequent rescue. Yang's morality can sometimes veer towards the Chaotic or Neutral as she can and will act as an aggressor in order to get what she wants when dealing with more shady types and while she doesn't necessarily fight "dirty", she seems to have few qualms with hitting below the belt, literally even, or stacking odds in her favor, even in something as innocuous as a card game, although this likely ties back into her slight penchant for mischief and enjoyment of winning.

Perhaps most poignant of all is, during the down-time of a high stakes mission, Yang expressed a rare moment of uncertainty in herself and her choices, stating that she really didn't choose to become a Huntress to help people and be a hero like her sister had, but because she wanted a life that would provide her with plenty of adventures and thrills. While she received some sound advice regarding this, she may still be somewhat unsure of her decision and her motivations for the career she chose.

All things considered though, Yang is fairly care-free and laidback with a generally bright and sunny attitude and love for life, incredibly caring and compassionate towards her sister and friends, a truly multifaceted individual.

Gem Considerations: Fire Agate. There is probably no better stone that embodies all of Yang's attributes. Vivacious, cheerful, and definitely a flirt, Yang has an abundance of strength both inside and out. She is warm, caring, and supportive of her sister and friends and she is absolutely unafraid and unashamed of her own sexuality, using the perceptions of others to her advantage. Fire Agate's burning colors complement her own fiery aura and relation to the sun and the stone's history with alchemy also relates well to the subject of one of Yang's theme songs. This gem reflects the roles Yang tends to enact within her team as well as her best qualities. On a more personal note, it may also be able to aid her in finding her purpose as a Huntress beyond simply being drawn to the thrill of it.

    Power considerations:

    • Super Strength

    • Bide/Power Absorb? (similar to how her Semblance works)

    • Regeneration

It is unclear how long Yang has had her above average strength (separate of her Semblance), but she has obviously been training both herself and her Aura for quite some time. As such, being unable to tap into her Aura and utilize her Semblance the way she used to might unsettle her a bit, at the very least internally, as that is essentially her soul. And it's possible she could even injure herself accidentally if she is not made immediately aware that she's unable to lift and hit with the power she used to naturally possess, which will almost assuredly spark some kind of negative reaction from her. Especially if she cannot then heal any damage done the way she normally would with her Aura. She will be able to cope however, and the chance of regaining her previous abilities will just make her even more determined to complete missions.

Sample: A recent log of Yang's from her other game, My Little Jamjar, featuring interactions with other RWBY castmates.

And a recent thread from the same game in which Yang does everything she can to help someone she's formed a bond with.
