[ things are so complicated. ruby's arrival only aggravated weiss' frustration with her partner. hearing that ruby went with those who remained in jnpr to mistral and bring justice upon cinder and her faction made her jealous. jealous that ruby was free, and that she was surrounded by people who cared about her. at the same time, she developed feelings of jealousy towards jaune, nora, and ren who were with ruby - one of the few friends she's ever made in her entire life.

she knows it's selfish, but does that stop her emotions? no. telling ruby about it finally might make the feeling go away, and that was what she was planning to do once ruby came back. her crystal was still with weiss until yesterday. not only did it instil some fear in weiss, but it also brought her down emotionally. fear of eating her own words that ruby will be back. all of this is a matter of pride.

but. she's also disappointed because she was finally going to set things straight with ruby. she was finally going to fight for her friend and get her back. too bad that isn't happening now. who knows when it will happen?

yang was away when ruby's crystal disappeared, which made things even more uncomfortable. how is she supposed to break the news to the blonde? with a heavy heart, that's how. and by the 27th, weiss establishes a mental link to yang, asking her if she'll be home soon. upon receiving a response, she makes sure that she's right outside the house, by the steps from the porch down to the front yard. the look on her face makes it obvious that what she has to say isn't good news, too. ]

[The crystal gathering quest was a rousing success and Yang's still riding the high of a mission completed as she strides back to the house, even waving enthusiastically to Weiss when she spots her waiting outside the house.]

Hey Weiss!!!

[Admittedly she hadn't thought too much of Weiss's asking after when she'd be back, assuming it either had to do with scheduling or, perhaps more likely, chores, but the look on Weiss's face is like a bucket of cold water hitting her. Her own expression starts to sober in response as she asks, almost hesitantly.]

...What's up?

[schmisse]

I'm... so sorry.

[ her voice is soft, barely inaudible. her eyes don't make contact with yang's when she apologises, too. it's not everyday that weiss feels bad for other people, so this is definitely something new. still, she manages to control herself and not break into tears. that's— that's just too much weakness in one day. ]

Ruby's crystal disappeared.

[ maybe she should have had yang go inside first and settle down, but weiss really wanted to get this out as soon as possible. the sooner she does it, the more weight is taken off her chest. ]

[Yang pales a little, disbelief settling into her features.]

I-I... [She swallows hard.] Isn't there any chance it was just stolen...?

[Yang already sounds resigned to the answers she's inevitably going to receive, regardless of the half-hearted attempt at a hopeful alternative.]

[schmisse]

[ this would be weiss' cue to say something along the lines of "i'd know if it was stolen or not" or something equally as annoyed. but she knows she did something wrong; not to yang, but to ruby. and now she has to make up for it in another way. ]

I considered it. It's why I tried to look for it too, but when I saw the wall where the names of Otherworlders who have disappeared are posted... I got my answer.

Oh...

[Her response is saddened, but not surprised. There was almost something karmic about it, if Yang believed in things like karma. After finally going looking for her sister back in their world, she'd been pulled into Verens instead but arrived just a couple days too late to actually reunite with her here instead.

Yang heaves a deep breath and then manages a weak smile. She looks tired, in a way that seems completely separate of the fact she just got back from a near-week long excursion.]

Guess I'll just...catch up with her later then.

[There's nobody to blame but herself on that front.]

Thanks...for looking into that... [Because she wouldn't have known to look there.] ...And for taking care of her crystal for so long.

[ there's no point in mulling over the whole ruby thing now that she's said her piece. she might still be upset over not being able to talk to ruby properly, but there are other chances. for all she knows, ruby could show up with the newcomers. weiss is... more optimistic about this. ]

We'll see her again, Yang. We both will.

[ strong words from weiss schnee herself. and hopefully it lifts the blonde's mood by a margin. ]

[Yang mulls that over a moment and then gives a nod, her expression warming just a little.]

Yeah...no, you're right.

I mean, I left and then came back here so maybe she will too.

[The very faintest of grins.]

She's so grounded though.

[ weiss huffs out a laugh at that. ]

If Ruby were my sister, she'd be grounded and she would have to do chores for an entire month. [ a lengthy pause before her face turns sour. ] Amongst other punishments.

[Harsh, Weiss.

A small chuckle sneaks out of her.]

Yeeaaah, I think I've gotten too soft over the years.

[One side of her mouth quirks up into that tell-tale expression of hers that always means "trouble".]

You wanna take over disciplining my little sister?

[This is just how she copes, Weiss.]

[ that... may have been a joke, but weiss looks away before responding. ]

I don't— [ a pause, then she takes a deep breath. a really deep breath!! ] I thought badly of Ruby, Yang.

[ it definitely sounds like a confession, too. ]

I know Ruby and I had our problems during our first few weeks as a team, but our friendship got better. And not being around you guys kind of. . . made me feel alone again. [ not that she ever told them she felt lonely to begin with. ] And when Nora told me about how they were travelling to Mistral, I felt jealous.

[ when she looks at yang again, it's with sorry eyes and a hint of a pout. ]

What about my team? Where would I place now? And I know now that they're awful thoughts, and I shouldn't be thinking them.

I don't think I can joke around about Ruby until I say all this to her face. And... until I apologise.

[ the last sentence seems a bit forced, but she really does mean it. DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG SHE'S MULLED OER THIS, YANG!! climbing down her pedestal was hard............ ]

Dear Yang,

I hope this letter finds you well. I know it's strange to say that when we live in the same house, but it's the perfect introduction to a letter.

I'm writing to you due to one of the tasks that was posted on the taskboard. I fully support the mailing system in Verens, and I sincerely hope that more people continue to write letters. Not only is it more personal than texts, but there's a piece of tradition left in each letter that I truly hope never goes away.

Doesn't it also feel good to receive a letter? It's definitely a much better feeling than receiving a text, especially since everybody can receive one if you just give them your number.

I hope this promotes you to write as well.

That's cool! Remnant hasn't had any actual royalty since the War. Kinda awesome meeting a real princess.

[Yang's stayed very quiet as Weiss speaks. She wasn't expecting a confession like this, but she's even more caught off-guard by how heartfelt it is. Not that she's never seen Weiss be heartfelt or sincere, but still.

She relents, looking a little concerned.]

Okay...No more Ruby jokes. I promise.

[Honestly, thinking about it, she'd feel exactly the same way if somebody joked about her and Blake, and she's sorta regretting not being more aware of the kind of strain Ruby and Weiss's relationship could be in. The whole thing is just so stupidly messed up...

At a thought, she offers a weak smile.]

But...for what it's worth? Back on Patch...you were the first person she asked me about when she finally woke up.

[Well, Weiss and Blake both, but forget Blake for the moment.]

And...I dunno. I think if I'd had my head in the right place, maybe the two of us could've figured out how to come visit you or something.

[Their dad knew people. Maybe he could've pulled some strings for them. He obviously had a line to the General of some kind that she hadn't known about.

But instead she'd shut Ruby out, so who else was her sister supposed to turn to for help? She's thought it once or twice before but this is as close as Yang's willing to come to admitting to somebody that her own choices could've been just as damaging as Blake's had been to their team.]

needless to say, weiss is stunned. she certainly didn't expect ruby to ask about her. she feels bad all the more now, but more importantly, she actually feels that somebody out there cares for her.

she already knows that, of course, because she has true friends, but hearing yang's words really touched her heart. she feels giddy now, and her heart flutters in excitement. ]

I... really should have thought better. [ she lets out a soft laugh before smiling weakly. ] And as much as I wanted to go out on my own and visit the people I actually do care about. . . I couldn't.

So you're forgiven. [ for not even trying to contact her and all. not that weiss even held it against yang! she did to ruby but... weiss is also petty and prideful. (this was also her attempt at a joke. it's not very good.) ]

[A day or two later (depending on how long Verens takes to process their mail), Weiss'll get this lovingly written response.]

Elected councils. [A beat.] Er, sort of.

Vale and Mistral do, but Atlas's council is kinda mashed up with their army and Vacuo's is sorta...eehhh

[She makes a waggly "not all there" gesture with her right hand.]
